This is a really small sketch I just did using a blue colored pencil. ( did you ever try to scan blue pencil? damn).
This is a layout for a graphite drawing I want to do today during my lunchbreak! I will us it on my letterhead for emails.
This sketch is About 3 inches tall.
This photo illustrates just how small this drawing really is!
Finished....and in just under 1 hour. She's will be used for my NEW stationery for my email. Leave a comment and I will email you a letter with this new design!

Princess Zelda

OK...I finished her this morning. Took me almost 12 hours to complete.
Here is the reference photo I used for this fantasy type drawing. The beautiful Australian Super Model Gemma Ward. I didn't stick too close to the reference pic because I wanted to make this more unique rather than a photo reproduction drawing.
Hope you like her enough to leave a comment!!!!!!!!!!

Just for Fun

This is a drawing I've been working on this week....just to kill some time. Killed about 4 hours so far, but I think this will be a really nice fantasy type drawing when complete.
Below shows my progress at 8 hours! I still have a good ways to go! I added more highlights to her nose for depth....she was looking a little flat and 2 dimensional.

2nd portrait for 2009 in progress
This is a pencil portrait of actress Zooey Deschanel (pronounced day-shun-ell ) requested by my son Kody! This is just a little gift for him, he doesn't ask me for much so I was glad to draw this.
Zooey's older sister "Emily" is the star of Fox's TV drama "BONES". They have very similar features.
•11" x 14" Strathmore 300 series smooth bristol
•2B & H pencils

My 15 year old son has a secret crush on a another actress. He pulled me aside and asked if I could do a nice drawing of her! He knows his father wouldn't turn down the chance to draw another beautiful woman:) :) :).
Here's an opportunity to show up close how I assemble a portrait.
They don't all start out with super smooth skin and sparkly eyes!
Here you can see I used an "H" pencil to lightly map out the skin areas.( later I will smooth it all over with some rolled-up tissues).
Everything here was done with the "H" lead with the exception of the eye detail...There I used a 0.3mm 2B lead in a mechanical pencil. These areas will also be smoothed over with a tortillion ( paper blending stump).
I should have more tomorrow.

Fat Tee Shirt

This was a tee shirt design I made for my Son and his buddies in High School...They wore their "Fat Club" shirts every Thursday throughout their senior year in school. Teachers said it was offensive and regularly asked them to remove the shirts! What was funny is NONE of the kids were all that fat!
My full time job is creating designs for a Screen Printing company...I produce literally thousands of these each year! My real love is drawing with my pencils as you see here on this blog.

ANGEL

IT IS FINISHED..... I thank everyone who watched this drawing in progress.
When I found this original drawing I instantly fell in love with it!
It was originally drawn by former Disney artist and current Dreamworks artist CHRIS SANDERS, Creator of Lilo & Stitch. I contacted Chris and asked for his permission to do this drawing with my own techniques! ( permission granted).
People ask "why would you draw something by another artist?".
I compare this to a recording artist singing their version of a song, originally recorded by one of their idols!!! No Harm...just ask permission first!! always!!!
As promised, HERE is the original drawing...Go check out Chris' wonderful artwork.

Something Weird
Here's a photo of my progress....should be finished real soon.

Part 7 ( roughly 7 hours invested so far). I've covered about 50% of the drawing surface but most of the difficult elements are done! The rest is basically fluffy clouds and small details. I estimate about 3 more hours to completion.

I have been extremely busy as of late! I have started a new ( and different) drawing today. I will explain more about it later when it starts to develop. This is just a small portion of a much larger drawing with lots of characters featured.
This little section is only 2 inches by 3 inches in size....the whole drawing will be 11" x 14" If I ever complete it.

First Drawing of 2009
OK...SHE IS FINISHED!
Here is a big Fat-Ass Close-Up shot
Here is todays update (Friday January 16 2009)

Happy New Year...I just started a new portrait drawing...what a surprise, another pretty girl! It may not seem like it, but I try NEW techniques with every drawing I do in an effort to improve. The subject matter may be a bit boring, but ultimately I hope to make something pleasant on the eyes. I am not trying to make any profound statements or any of that artistic bullshit, just a nice little sketch.

Drawing Hair
I've been asked many times "How do you draw hair like that?" Last year I made a short video clip showing the basic technique I use for drawing hair.
• I separate the hair into sections
• Then I use flick-like strokes, all in the same direction ( like striking a match).
• Usually, I start from the ends ( of each sectioned piece) and flick toward the center of the section ( where the highlight would be).
This clip is in REAL time....it is not sped up and there is NO sound.
If you would like to see the finished version of this drawing, Click Here
Click HERE to see a higher quality QuickTime® version of this clip.
This clip shows the technique I use to add the finishing touches to an area of hair. It adds a realistic effect to otherwise flat looking ribbons of hair.
This clip "HAS" audio so you can hear me ( with my stupid voice) explain what I am doing. I hope you find this helpful, or at the very least, entertaining.

Rogue ( older drawing )

An X-men character ( xmen? does this mean that they were once men, now women?) This is based on a drawing I saw from a FANTASTIC German cartoonist Stefanie Achtnig. This is a couple years old and I mailed the original drawing to Stefanie. I hope she kept it.
She gave me permission to re-draw her original in My style....Please, always ask for the artists permission!

MERMAID
WOW...my third update and STILL no comments? I guess this isn't as good as I originally thought! Well anyway, she is finished!

This drawing was inspired by a magnificent sketch I saw by a fantastic artist named Robert Islas. He graciously gave me permission to do a graphite rendering of his drawing. This is VERY small...on an 8" x 10" piece of bristol board...her face alone is smaller than 1 square inch!
I should have this finished in no time! Check back soon.
HERE is Robert's Blog...go see for yourself his amazing work!

MORE THAN PENCILS

I have literally thousands of ink drawings like these I've accumulated over the years from being in the screen printing business. I did all of them with my rapidograph refillable technical drawing ink pens! I would draw things roughly in pencil and then lay translucent vellum over top and trace it in INK....Scan the drawing into photoshop and get it ready for press!
I just prefer to show my favorite media ,GRAPHITE!!!
I do this kind of stuff all day at work and it is a joy just to grab my pencils at lunch and just draw!

KIPI

While searching for something on Google, I accidentally found this picture...I thought it would be a really nice drawing, with all of the textures and what-not. I honestly didn't have any idea WHO this girl is! After some research I found out that Her name is KIPI . She is a cosplay actress from Tokyo, Japan and she is 20, will be 21 in August
11" x 14" (28 x 36cm) smooth bristol paper/2B & H pencils/ a total of 11 hours....one of the longest drawings I've done.

DRAWING no.4 for 2008

This is only the very early stages of a rather complicated drawing. Many details throughout. Here you see just the top half ( it's all that fit in my scanner).
• I first drew these features with a very light "H" pencil and softened the pencil lines with tissues.
• Then I went into the dark areas with the much darker "2B" pencil to add contrast.
This is the simple formula I stick to for all my drawings. Thanks to all 13 people who stopped by to see my last drawing! :)
Did I mention I hate to draw hands?

Almost Finished

I made a little more progress on this drawing. I'm hoping to complete this during my lunch break today!
I notice there is very little interest in this drawing from you viewers! Oh well, I still like it! I only wish more people felt the same.

80's sketchbook pages
I enjoyed Kali's sketch blogs and they reminded me of my old sketch books. These are some pages from one of my very old sketchbooks from the early 1980's. 98% of these were drawn with a fine point felt tip marker! I would draw until the pages were full and get another sketchbook! There was NO order to this or purpose, just passing time with goofy doodles. Hope you like them!

Abbey Chase ( DangerGirl )

I did a little more work on this today. Her nose was troubling me since I first sketched this out!!! So I did a little rhinoplasty on her proboscis! Even though the first nose was OK, it needed to look a little more CAMPBELL-like and upturned. Thanks for having a look today.
Abbey Chase work in progress, based on the character created by Master Comic book Artist J Scott Campbell.
This will be 11" high and 14" wide when she is complete!
Please check back for updates!

Damaged My Drawing Hand
Well, I won't be doing any drawing for a while! My hand was ripped open by a screen door handle! I had my dog on a leash and she blasted out the door, slamming my hand into the handle. The flat handle went through of my hand. It felt like being smashed by a hammer.
This sucks, I do EVERYTHING with this hand. I received 12 stitches to close it up. In 2 weeks , the stitches will come out and hopefully I can draw again! Ouch!

Jayne Wisener ( work in progress)

here's an update showing where I am with the hair! I should be finished this drawing one day this week! Thanks to all who left a comment!
With an HB pencil, I sketched out the various locks of long hair!! When I'm happy with the shapes, I go in with a 2B pencil for sharper definition and higher contrast...That's when it "POPS".
I also spent about 20 minutes repairing her nose, the bridge of her nose was off to the left too much. I also repaired her bottom lip to make it more balanced. 5 hours total so far!

I just started another drawing the other day...I think this one will be very beautiful!
This is young Irish actress Jayne Wisener ( Joanna in the new Sweeney Todd movie). She is quite a lovely lass with her HUGE wide eyes and ridiculously tiny nose...Awesome.
As you can see from the photo, her face is quite small but the over all drawing will be the same size as all the others!
